About Me

Since my first trip to Gettysburg as a young boy, I've been captivated by History. I get it from my mom. Although she passed away when I was just 13, she still had an influence on me. All our family vacations were stitched around some historical site. So, history geeks are in my blood. I'm a graphic designer by profession and a semi-amateur painter. I love to explore history through my paintbrush. I've also done living history to get a first hand feel for "what it was like". Looking at history through the eyes of the common man (or woman) and understanding the personal, human drama is really the spice that flavors the historical stew!

History, Fresh Air and Paint!

Last weekend I finally got back into plein aire painting...that is, painting outside. Naturally, I chose historic Allaire Village which I've written about before.

Winslow Homer was a big proponent of painting in natural light and I am reminded why. Although I am way out of practice and my results where dismal, it was a heck of a lot of fun! Plus, it's a great way to experience a historical spot. Even if you don't fancy yourself an artist, making a small sketch or painting on location really forces you to see and think about what is before you.

For inspiration, here's a few more pictures of the day:

The scene I was working on...the foreman's quarters

The mill pond right next to where I was working

Plenty of scenes to paint!

And one last look at the geek at the easel!

Awe, you're not a geek. I take a pretty decent picture, don't I? What a pretty day that was.

Looks like a neat trip Pete. I find myself inspired by landscape as much as figure subjects sometimes. Wish I had time for trips like this myself.

Gary,
As I mentioned, the painting was a dud! There's a whole different mindset to painting on location and I'm seriously out of practice...maybe I'll post the nest one.
