- Since my first trip to Gettysburg as a young boy, I've been captivated by History. I get it from my mom. Although she passed away when I was just 13, she still had an influence on me. All our family vacations were stitched around some historical site. So, history geeks are in my blood. I'm a graphic designer by profession and a semi-amateur painter. I love to explore history through my paintbrush. I've also done living history to get a first hand feel for "what it was like". Looking at history through the eyes of the common man (or woman) and understanding the personal, human drama is really the spice that flavors the historical stew!

First of all, sorry I've neglected this blog for so long. Being busy is no excuse! To be honest, the writing muse hasn't really struck me in a while. Since it's Memorial Day weekend, I thought a few words were in order.
I don't have to remind you to thank a vet this weekend, or to think of those who never came home. When I think about it, I know a lot of veterans and many have mentioned how difficult this weekend can be for them. While the rest of us are partying, barbequeing and what not, they are dredging up painful memories. I would have to think that it's a pretty lonely feeling, so try to make someone's day.
That said, this is a big weekend for history and there's no better place to visit than History.com, the new History Channel website. I've heard the gripes about the humdrum programming on the History Channel and in many respects, I agree. How many episodes of Ice Road Truckers and Modern Marvels can you watch? Is that even history? Then there's The Story of US, Ancient Aliens and American Pickers. Now that's good TV! So, as far as the channel is concerned, it's a mixed review from me.
One thing you can't argue with is their new website! OMMA (Online Media, Marketing and Advertising) Magazine recently recently did a review of the History website (yeah, it's just History now, not History Channel. How posh!). I admit, I hadn't checked out the website in a long, long time. OMMA's review was very positive and made it obvious that History really thought it through this time.
If you had to sum it up in one word, multimedia comes to mind. The new site abounds with videos and games! I'm addicted to the history quiz. My high score was around 1600. I bet you can beat that....a lot of other people did! There's an amazing interactive section too. For instance, the WWII one starts with a world map and lets you drill to through a myriad of topics. I ended up at the D-Day section where can see training footage (color too) of a Higgins boat in action. The Action section has online games you can play (I tried Warriors and kicked a little butt!), and there's also sections for Quizes, Puzzles and a couple of downloadable games as well.
So, if you have a break in your barbaque, or it rains on your parade, check out History.com for some online fun. You just might learn something new too.
Stay safe, enjoy, remember.
